June 22, 2014 Sprinting

  • 200m: 4
  • 100m:2
  • Total: 1000m
Very hard time on the 200s, quads felt tight and cardiovascularly I was just not doing well.  First 200 was fine, 2nd was ok, and 3rd & 4th were brutal.  Finished with 100s, and I will say I was absolutely flying on the last one.

welp, that went well. Last 2 I was ready to choke for the last 100m.  Still though...good stuff.

Can't recall if I've written about this yet, might as well put it here.  When I was 4 I had an incarcerated hernia on my left. It got repaired and supposedly I can't have a hernia on that side anymore because of some mesh or something. Anyway....About 6 weeks ago I slipped on a wet floor and thought I strained my left adductor, and groin, slightly. Everything felt fine a couple weeks later. Then I noticed on the right side of my extreme lower abdomen, near the hip crease, that I was having vague soreness. It kind of built up over the past month, but only when I do certain things, and has spread to the left side now too.

When I sprint, my first warmup jog is excruciating. It feels like something to either side of my groin is tearing or being stabbed and is uncomfortable as fuck. I also notice a painful yanking sensation in both adductors. My next warmup run it's a little better. By the third the feeling is completely gone on the left, and I get a faint vague soreness on the right side the rest of the session, nothing that slows me down. The rest of the day there's a faint soreness on both sides, like a muscle that's been worked extra hard. Next, when I do certain ab-exercises, like dead bugs, I get the discomfort in my groin, kind of like something is squeezing the fuck out of my balls.

My first inclination was that I had a double hernia. But again, most days I'm fine.  I can squat/deadlift/brace my abs/etc. fine without any discomfort. I had an idea one day to try the adductor machine (the one where you sit and squeeze your legs together, i.e. the good girl/ bad girl machine) and sure enough it was awful.
My adductors had that yanking pain in them, the pain and discomfort in my groin was there, everything. Same thing if I'm standing and try to move a plate that's lying on the gym floor with my foot (so like 25 lbs. plate, put my right foot on the right side of the plate and try to push it to the left).  So now I'm confused as to what this is, and what I should do for it. It's not exactly a major issue, but I'd prefer to be able to warmup for sprints without shrieking and cursing as I do my warmup jog.

Wow. Not sure where the 4 200s came from. Was hoping for 2. Good speed on them too.  Didn't really slow down until the final 50 or so of the 4th.  Things are going well here, I think it's the nutrition I'm getting from this cut. I finally finished calculating some stuff last night, and will be posting it today. I know I keep saying that, but for real this time, I've got it all ready to go.

Going to start broad jumping again soon, I'm down to about 210 right now, and it should be easier on my joints landing.

First 200 of the year, felt good. I'll try and get 2 next week, and then go from there. We shall see. This session went pretty good, not a ton of shin splints except the last 2 100s I ran, so that's getting better.

Stayed light on my feet for all of them, focused on mid-foot strikes.  Felt much better! Faster too

October 1, 2013 Upper Body Heavy

  • Bench Press: 225*3 265*3 275*2
  • T-Bar Rows: 160*3 160*3 160*3
  • Timed Bench Press (3:00): 135*56
  • Landmine Laterals: 70*3 70*2
  • 1000m Row: 3:39
Gym is doing the competitions again, and I kept getting lured over, decided after benching & rowing to give it a shot. Fun times.  Can definitely do better on the benching & 1000m row.  It's going through the end of October, so we'll see what I can do.

July 31, 2013 Sprinting & Jumping

  • 200m: 5
  • Total: 1000m
  • Broad Jumps: 9' 3", 9' 4", 9' 5"
Good times!  The 200s were slightly easier this time.  Broad jumps are still at the lower end, I'm just exhausted by the time I get there. At some point I'll do a 600m day and then see how far I can get.

July 24, 2013 Sprinting, Broad Jumps

  • 200m: 3
  • 100m: 4
  • Total: 1000m
  • Broad Jumps: 9' 3", 9' 4", 9' 4",
Good session, didn't feel like doing 5 200s again.  Wasps seem to have vacated the sand pit so I could actually do broad jumps again. although doing a full 1000 meters beforehand definitely cuts into my ability on them.

I thought on the 4th & 5th 200s that I might actually die.  Couldn't do broad jumps because there were about a dozen wasps buzzing around the sand; I didn't feel like jumping face-first into a wasp.  Great session though, pushed myself extremely hard the whole way, didn't let up for a single meter on any of these 5.

Was going to do 700, but then decided it's time to be doing 1000 meters in sessions again. Typing this out on Sunday July 14th...so hyped up right now wish I could go sprinting right now. I'm doing 200s this coming week.  On broad jumps I was just tired from the sprinting. We'll see how it goes this coming week.

  • 100m: 1, 1, 1 (13.47) NEW PR!!, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1
  • Total: 1000m
Nice weather, good for some sprints. Hopefully I can knock some time off them now that the weather is nicer and I can do them more consistently.

edit:  I thought 13.25 was my PR.  Apparently this was. If I had known that I would've gone in on my next couple to see if I could've shaved more time off.  Good times!

Really wish I had bought a stop-watch sooner, last summer I feel like I was fast, not sure if I was ever this fast though.  It's nice to see my list of PRs on sprinting steadily getting faster over the last 12 months. Feels good man

Good session, wasn't really in the mood at first, but I'm taking next week off so I kind of needed to. First 300 of the year, always an adventure.  Finished with some 60s because I didn't feel like doing a bunch more 100s, and I'm trying to get faster at the start .Did some broad jumps at the end, still going consistently. This is at Harvard's Track as well, so the lengths are different.

Good session, added in the 200s. On the very last 100 it started to rain, so looks like I got it in just in time.  Didn't get a chance to broad jump though. Timed my first 100, but again running into strong swirling wind that is plaguing the region lately, only did 14.3

Last couple sprints were a bit slow/dragging/plodding but the first ones felt good. Had that swirling again out there that I don't like, but my shins didn't splint up or anything so that was nice.  There were Harvard track people using the sand pit so I couldn't do broad jumps, which was ok because I was pretty beat anyway.

April 24, 2013 Sprinting / Broad Jumping & Conditioning

  • 100m: 10
  • Broad Jump: 8' 2", 9' 1", 8' 11"
Wind was strong again, but it was warmer. Swirling wind, was running straight into it for most of the sprinting.  Didn't bother timing it, wind was probably knocking .2 off my times at least.  Last 4 runs were brutal, just beating myself into conditioned shape.  Had shin splints too, not fun.   What was fun, they have a kids group going so there are 5-10 year olds sprinting and jumping around, watching them have a blast was great.  Finished with a few broad jumps.  Definitely get a little further at Harvard than I do at my gym.  Good times.  I'll do one more set of broad jumps at Harvard, before declaring a PR.   As it is, 9' 1" is the record.

February 24, 2013 Conditioning

  • Monster Walks: 10 steps each direction
  • Broad Jumps: 7' 8", 7' 11" 8' 2", 9' 0.5" NEW PR!!! whoah.. 8' 3.5", 8' 7.5" would've been PR a minute earlier, 8' 4.5", 8' 3.5" 8' 3.5", 8' 3.5", 8' 2.5"
  • 31.5" ply box jumps: 15
  • 31.5" seated plyo box jumps: 15
  • 1000m row: 3:52 NEW PR!!

I didn't really think about it before, but since I'm taking the week off from lower body stuff there was no squats a couple days before this workout.  I didn't know how much of an effect it would have on things.  Started with broad jumps; got a few at the high 7' mark, one over 8, then I absolutely uncorked one.  I looked down and the tip of my feet were over 10'.  When I first started with the jumps I was measuring where my toes land, and thought about one day seeing them over 10'.   (I went back and adjusted all my distances to what they should have been, where my heal hit).  So yeah, I absolutely obliterated my previous record of 8' 5".   I think I'm more than capable of hitting 9'+ right now, even in a bulked state.  I need to be more disciplined and make sure my arms swing, I explode through my posterior chain, and jump high and forward enough and stab my feet forward as I land.  That 9' jump is the first time it felt 'right' in all those regards. Two jumps later I got what would've been a PR about a minute earlier, and the rest of the session was over 8'. I have to say that this is the first time I've actually felt sore in my posterior chain after jumping.

Did my plyo jumps after, someone commented the seated jumps were impressive...I felt good, then I remembered there's videos of guys doing 51" jumps from a seated position.   Anyway, I decided to finish with some rowing, it went great!  New record on the 1000m row.

55 degrees out!  Overcast, and the track was damp but I wasn't passing up this opportunity.  Got a full set in too which is great. I'm focusing on the first 10m especially since I feel like I'm leaving a lot of time on the track in that first part, and then the second 10m as well.  I think I could shave a 1/2 second off my time just on those first 20m.   There were tons of starlings and canada geese all around the track, 100s of each.  Was nice to have company on an otherwise overcast dreary day.

Decided to mix it up here.  I actually like that, the 100s seem so much easier after doing a 200 right before them.   Good session, was pretty cold out though, and I still hate running in the chilly weather.

Was a bit chilly so I threw an extra long sleeve shirt on.  I feel like in the cold weather my 3rd-7th sprints are fine, but that the last few I'm just sucking wind.  Need to time myself again next time the temperature is decent and I don't feel like I'm inhaling pure carbon dioxide.

Nothing extraordinary here, just sprinted.  I feel like the 1/2 court sprints from a kneel I'm going to be doing may help with my start here on these sprints.  My first 20 meters are woefully slow right now  in the 100m.  Hopefully that remedies the issue.  I felt good running here, wasn't too exhausted by it.  Not much else to say, just a good sprint session. Went home and took an epsom salt soak.  I can't tell if they do anything, but I'm definitely sleepy after doing it. May wait until right before bed to do it next week.
